Abstract

This theory generation utilized the axiomatic approach where propositions were derived for validation. A rigorous review of related literature and studies were undertaken to provide background knowledge and bases for the formulation of the axioms in this study. Basic to all human beings is the need to be cared for. The family is the primary and most natural source of social support for human well-being. Caring for an older family member is described as providing presence in addressing the health care needs of the elderly. It involves holistic care, it is the caregivers' physical, mental, emotional and spiritual presence. The care provided by family caregiver to the elderly is hierarchical. The first choice to be enlisted as family caregiver is the living spouse, followed by adult children, siblings and other relatives, and non-family members. Proximity in living arrangement plays a role in family caregiving. It gives more meaning and time to the caregiving phenomenon. The motivations behind informal family caregiving vary among family members. It is rooted in different factors such as altruism, reciprocity, social and cultural norms, and role modelling. The developed model on Family-Based Caregiving an approach to elderly care described the caring processes into an overarching categories: the hierarchy of the caregivers or the priority of relationship among the caregiver and the elderly; the level of presencing; the level and categories of motivation and the caregiving outcomes in the psychological well-being and satisfaction of the elderly from the care received.
