This multicenter study documents the very low prevalence (1.1%) of intestinal amebiasis (E. histolytica) among diarrheic patients consulting in health facilities in five regions known to be highly endemic for the disease. In addition, it confirms the need to re-train laboratory staff in DOH health facilities in stool microscopy in order to decrease the number of false positives (for E. histolytica) leading to overdiagnosis of amebiasis and hence, the misuse of antimicrobials in diarrhea).
