A single-blind randomized study was done comparing the sterilizing activities of glutaraldehyde and saponated cresol at one hour soaking, 5 hours and 10 hours. The subjects were 120 gauge 23 hypodermic needles contaminated with E. coli and S. aureus.

Results showed that cresol is comparable to glutaradehyde in decreasing induced bacterial growth. One hour of soaking in sterilizing solutions is probably sufficient, as compared to 5 and 10 hours. Multifactoral ANOVA values of F=1.678 for S. aureus and F=0.561 for E. coli at p 0.05 were not statistically significant.

Seventy percent isopropanol may have some synergistic effect on glutaraldehyde. This study even shows that isopropanol can be a good sterilizing agent.

To determine if isopropanol has a synergetic effect on the action of glutaraldehyde.4. To determine if ten hours soaking time with glutaraldehyde is really necessary.
