In an era of widespread concern about quality of care and use of limited health care resources, methods to assess the risk of cardiac surgery are of increasing importance. In the Philippine Heart Center where roughly 300 to 400 cases of coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) are done annually, there is paucity of published data on the rate of in-hospital mortality and the effect of preoperative variables on operative results. Furthermore, models (Risk Index) that predict surgical outcome with CABG based on the presence or absence of particular risk factors are not on hand
OBJECTIVE: It is therefore the aim of this study to validate a risk index for in-hospital mortality, ICU LOS and Hosp LOS following CABG
METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were collected from 910 patients who underwent CABG from January 1996 to June 1999. When the Risk Index was tested in this set of patients, the index reliably predicted the outcomes of interest with increasing risk scores associated with greater mortality rates
CONCLUSION: This simple nine-variable risk index can be used to predict in-hospital mortality, and perhaps the ICU LOS and Hosp LOS following CABG. The index has potential application as a risk stratification tool for comparing patient outcome and in helping evaluate the quality of care provided by the PHC with the goal of continuous improvement.
