Primary Outcomes

To determine the knowledge, attitude, and practices of non-ophthalmic physicians-in-training regarding recognition and prevention of exposure keratopathy among patients admitted at the Philippine General Hospital

Health Condition(s) or Problem(s) Studied

In recent years, there has been a significant rise in referred cases of exposure keratopathy to the External Disease and Cornea Clinic in our institution. All cases were referred when the corneal complications were already present. Currently, there is no local published data on the awareness of non-ophthalmic physicians-in-training on this visually disabling yet preventable disease. The researchers aim to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practices of non-ophthalmic physicians-in-training regarding recognition and prevention of exposure keratopathy among patients admitted at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). Although no direct benefit to the respondents, the researchers hope to use the data gathered from this study to help formulate hospital guidelines for the prevention of this visually-disabling disease.

Primary Outcomes
The aim of this study is to describe the knowledge, attitude, and practices of UP Manila students. Information gained from this research can help determine whether there is a need to promote the no rinse post-toothbrushing method to the UP Manila community. Increase in the awareness of UP Manila . . .
Health Condition(s) or Problem(s) Studied

The benefits of fluoride found in toothpaste in caries prevention is lessened if rinsing with water after toothbrushing is done (Pitts, et al., 2012). There are many literatures supporting the beneficial effects of no rinse post-toothbrushing method. However, this is not widely practiced among Filipinos. Therefore, the promotion of the caries reduction capabilities of fluoride (Jensen, Gabre, Moberg Skold, & Birkhed, 2013) and the practice of no rinse post-toothbrushing is recommended (FDI World Dental Federation, 2015).

Results from local studies on health sciences students show that they generally have good knowledge and attitude on dental hygiene. However, no studies were found on whether health sciences students use fluoridated toothpaste or practice the no rinse post-toothbrushing method. Being the national health sciences center, University of the Philippines Manila focuses on producing well-trained health care professionals that will serve the country. Thus, UP Manila students must be equipped with enough knowledge that they can use in treating patients in the future, which involves overall health wherein oral health is also included.
