We undertook a retrospective analysis of 114 records of acute renal failure (ARF). Main criterion for inclusion to the study was the presence of significant azotemia. Only 71 charts can be adequately assessed and thus are the subjects of this investigation. There were 36 (51%) males and 35 (49%) females in all. Of these 35 (49%) were considered as oliguric, and 36 (51%) as nonoliguric. There were significant differences in age, average diastolic blood pressure, and levels of azotemia in both the oliguric and nonoliguric groups. Infectious diseases were the major causes in both groups. However, frequency of dialysis and mortality rate were significantly greater for oliguric than for nonoliguric cases. Elderly patients tended to incur greater mortality than younger ones. It is hereby emphasized that suppression of urine flow is not a prerequisite to diagnosing ARF as more cases tend to be nonoliguric nowadays than traditionally appreciated.
