Abstract

All HI receptor antagonists are pharmacologic competitors of histamine and exert maximal effect if taken before an anticipated immediate hypersensitivity reaction. Many of this new class of antihistamine are lipophobic do not cross the blood brain barrier readily and are therefore associated with a lesser incidence of sedation than the first generation drugs. Many of these new antihistamine also lack anticholinergic effects thus abolishing reaction such as dryness of the mouth and throat, usually seen in older antihistamines
