The aim of this experimental study was to determine the efficacy of intravenous Tramadol to suppress shivering,to determine the duraction it will completely suppress shivering compares to Meperidine and to determine its adverse effects post-operatively.102 patients was selected for this study who underwent regional anesthesia for abdominal,perineal and lower extremity surgery in MCU-FDTMF from November 2003 to May 2004 using the table of randomizaion;group 1 received Tramadol 1 mg/kg and group 2 will receive Meperidine or Tramadol and post-operative side effects was computed using T-test and X2.Homogeneity between groups was demonstrated with regards to demographic and ansthetic variables.Duration of surgery of the Meperidine group is longer-range of 15-300 minutes median of 85 minutes compared to Tramadol range of 15-180 minutes median of 67.Four patients in the Meperidine group received rescue dose,3 patients rescue dose in Tramadol group.Intra-operative shivering in Tramadol 1mg/kg stopped by 49.04 seconds (SD=10.4 seconds)compared to Meperidine 25 mg by 41.86 seconds (SD=9.09 seconds).There was no nausea and vomiting with the Tramadol group compared to the Meperidine group having 9 patients with nausea and vomiting.
General Objective:To determine the efficacy of intravenous.Tramadol to suppress intra-operative shivering.
Specific Objectives:1.To determine the effect of intravenous Tramadol vs intravenous Meperidine to suppress intra -operative shivering.
2.To determine the duration it will take to completely suppress shivering after administration of Tramadol IV and Meperidine IV.
3.To determine the adverse effects of IV Tramadol post-operatively.
