Abstract

The anti-inflammatory action of the purified extract of Mikania cordata (Burm.F) B. L. Robinson was confirmed in two in-vivo test systems. The system significantly suppressed exudate volume and leukocyte migration in the carrageenan-induced pleurisy model at an oral dose of 200 mg/kg. A dose-dependent inhibition of mouse paw edema was observed with an ID50 of 100 mg/kg. These in-vivo anti-inflammatory responses exhibited by the plant extract are consistent with the biochemical activities displayed by one of its constituents, scandenolide. Scandenolide has shown to potently inhibit the synthesis of the inflammatory mediators leukotriene B4 and platelet-activating factor. These results are suggestive of the therapeutic potential of the plant as a crude anti-inflammatory drug.
