Inclusion: ambulatory adult patients diagnosed with hypertension and maintained on at least 1 blood pressure lowering medication, consulting at the PGH General Medicine Outpatient Continuity Clinic, with SBP >129 mmHg and < 160 mmHg or DBP >79 mmHg and <100 mmHg, and daily access to a mobile phone in the houshold Exclusion: no informed consent; participation in other trials; with a clinical condition that might interfere with study participation, such as dementia, psychological disorders; patients who share a household with another patient who has already been recruited to participate in the study

SMS text reminders
The treatment group received 2 SMS text messages per week for 12 weeks on top of usual care. These messages remind patients to take their antihypertensive medications daily. The control group received usual care, which consists of physician visits, advice and medication prescription by the healthcare provider.
