PREVALENCE OF NECK AND SHOULDER PAIN AMONGST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ITS RELATION TO ARMCHAIR MEASUREMENT.

Abstract

     Neck and shoulder pain (NSP) are common complaints in the general population, and they often cause remarkable personal sufferings due to pain, disability, and impaired quality of life. Inappropriately designed furniture, incongruous to the characteristics of a student can result in faster fatigue, defective posture, and may lead to establishment of pathological states such as lack of focus which could affect their class performance. Qualified respondent's demographic profile and elbow measurement while in a correct and relaxed sitting position were taken and answered Neck Pain and Disability Scale and Shoulder Pain and Disability. The results of these data were correlated with the results of the respondent's elbow flexion measurement while in relaxed and proper sitting position. Based on the results of this study, the prevalence of the respondents with neck and shoulder pain are common among 17 years old, female, right handed, height of below 62 inches and weight of below 51 kilograms. While in armchair measurement, shoulder pain is common below 55 degrees, neck pain is between 55-64 degrees. The results reveal that there is no significant relationship between the armchair measurement and the prevalence of neck and shoulder pain and disability among the Grade 12 STEM students.
