The effect of 100% ethanolic extract of Allium Cepa (white onion bulb) on the clotting time of Sprague-Dawley Rats.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases are recorded to be the top causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the Philippines, they comprise 22% of all deaths. Therapeutic management of cardiovascular diseases involving thrombotic clots were usually managed through anticoagulant therapy. Allium cepa (white onion bulb) has been found to have anticoagulant properties due to its significant amount of flavonoids making it a considerable alternative. Thus, the need to conduct the study to identify the effect of Allium cepa (white onion bulb) on the clotting time of Sprague-dawley rats.


RESULTS: The pre-treatment clotting time of the treatment groups were as follows: 106.75+17.61, 98.25+26.46 and 112.88+24.52 for the Dabigatran etexilate, white onion bulb extract and normal saline solution respectively. The post-treatment clotting time were as follows: 402.38+58.04, 218.25+36.90 and 113.50+26.20 for the Dabigatran etexilate, white onion bulb extract and normal saline solution respectively. One-way ANOVA showed the post-treatment clotting time was not significantly the same among the treatment groups, at 0.05 level of significance, F(2,21) = 94.755, p < 0.05. Rats treated with Dabigatran and white onion bulb extract had an increased clotting time two to three times greater than the baseline values.


CONCLUSION: The white onion bulb has an effect on the clotting time.
