PAD detection and leg function using the 6 minute walk test on elderly hypertensive patients.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common, but infrequently unrecognized manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis. Patients with PAD have an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality that is similar to patients with history of coronary artery disease.


The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of PAD among hypertensive subjects by using ABI and correlate the ABI with the maximum distance traveled in the six minute walk test.


A total of 103 subjects were enrolled in the study. Most of the participants are female (78%) and hypertensive (92%) with the mean age of 69. the value of the ABI had a direct correlation with the mean distance traveled during the 6 minute walk test (r=.571, p=.000). There were a total of 14 patients (13.5%) with PAD with a mean ABI valueof 1.1. This indicates a mild severity of PAD among those positive with PAD indicating an 8% increase in distance traveled. Using the Mann Whitney test, this was statistically significant at p value of 0.017


Unrecognized asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease is common among elderly hypertensive patients in the primary care setting. Most patients were female and had a mild severity of PAD based on the ABI. the 6 minute walk test is a reliable tool to assess the leg function of PAD patients and distance traveled using this test correlate directly with the ABI values.
