Effectiveness of constraint-induced movement therapy using sling and glove for functional performance on the upper extremity among selected post-stroke clients in Cebu City.

Abstract

Objective: This research compared the effectiveness of constraint-induced movement therapy using sling and glove in performing functional performance on the upper extremity among post-stroke clients in Cebu City.


Design: The quasi-experimental design was used.


Setting: The study was conducted in the homes of the recruited clients within Cebu City namely: Pasil, Talamban, Labangon, Mambaling.


Subjects: Sixteen post-stroke clients were selected through purposive sampling. Eight participant were assigned to Group A and eight participants to Group B.


Procedure/Interventions: Sixteen post-stroke clients were randomly assigned either on Group A and Group B. Both groups received a pre-test using Modified Kenny Self-care Evaluation. A time schedule sheet with the specific activities was given to monitor when to use the restraining devices (sling or glove). After 1 week, both groups underwent a post-test. Data were analyzed for comparison of results and derivation of significant conclusion.


Research Instruments: A Modified Kenny Self-care Evaluation was used to assess functional performance on upper extremity.


Results: The pre-test score for Group A was 36.45; 36.04 for group B. After one week intervention, the post-test score for group A was 39.58; 38.27 for group B. A computed t-value of 6.32 fr group A and 7.52 for group B were compared to a critical t-value of 1.895 which showed a significant difference. An independent t-test of 1.37 was compared to a critical value of 1.761 to determine the significant difference was compared to a critical value of 1.761 to determine the significant between the functional performance scores of the clients in group A and group B.


Conclusion: There was no significant difference between the functional performance scores of group A and group B among selected post-stroke clients. Both the sling and glove used in constraint-induced movement therapy were significantly effective in promoting functional performance on affected upper extremity among selected post-stroke clients.
