Characteristics of Children with Asthma in a Suburban Metro Cebu Area : A Prevalence study

Abstract

Asthma has become a public health concern because prevalence, healthcare utilization, cost and mortality of the disease of increase during the last decade. No information exists on the prevalence o asthma among children in the Metropolitan area of Cebu. With these concerns, the soup conducted a cross-sectional study in a sub urban community in Cebu to establish a baseline prevalence of asthma among children between the ages three and fifteen ( 3 and 15) years. The study was undertaken in Guadalupe, Cebu City involving four hundred fifty ( 450) children.

A structured questionnaire was administered to the mothers of these children by local healthcare workers to identify asthmatic cases. In addition, a descriptive type of analysis was conducted on variable that could influence asthma prevalence such as ; age , sex, family income, and seasonal patterns were also collected.

About ninety two(92%) of the sample population participated in the survey. Of the four hundred seventeen (417) children studied, sixteen (16%) were identified asthmatic, which were lower compared to a previous study conducted in Metro Manila area. Our study showed a male predominance of asthmatics and the prevalence o asthma decreases as the child gets older. Age of asthmatic attack is as early as less than 1 year and occurrence attacks are mot common between the months April to July and November to December in this study. Low family income also influence a greater degree of occurrence o asthmatic children.

Objectives

The purpose of the study is to establish a baseline prevalence of asthma among children between the ages three and fifteen ( 3 and 15) years in this area. The findings of this study should serve as a baseline in the understanding of the epidemiology of asthma among these children. Additional studies are needed to further the risk factors of the disease and the information provided would be used to identify preventive measures.
