Abstract

A REVIEW OF THE FACTORS AFFECTING ASSOCIATED WITH STATUS EPILEPTICUS AND THEIR OUTCOMES AMONG PEDIATRIC PATIENTS ADMITTED AT VICENTE SOTTO MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER FROM JANUARY 2008 TO DECEMBER 2008

OBJECTIVES : To determine the factors associated with status epilepticus and their outcome among pediatric patients admitted with status epilepticus at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center from January 2008 to December 2008.

SETTING : This is a retrospective chart review study done at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

SAMPLES : All pediatric patients diagnosed with status epilepticus admitted as VSMMC from January 2008 to December 2008 who passed the inclusion and exclusion criteria in this study.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES : Frequency and percentage distribution .

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION : There were more cases of status epilepticus among pediatric patients aged under six years old, nourished, socio-economically deprived pediatric patients from rural areas in Cebu province. All patients included in the study has generalized tonic-clonic seizure. The leading most common cause of status epilepticus was seizure disorder, followed by acute bacterial meningitis and acute diarrhea with severe dehydration. Most of them had concomitant pneumonia or diarrhea. Fifty -four percent expired who stayed less than 24 hours. Caregivers were parents whose patients were medically non- compliant.
