An assessment of the ambient air quality in Iligan City using standard and phytomonitoring.

Three study sites were selected in Iligan City from which air samples were taken three times during the period June 1997-January 1998. The air samples were analysed for the following contents: sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and lead (Pb) using standardchemical and spectroscopic methods. These levels were compared with the DENR standards for good quality ambient air, and based on their relative pollution loading, the three sites were identified as Pollution site 1 (Pilmico), Pollution site 2 (Napocor) and reference (site 3, Buru-un). The reference site is the least polluted among the three study sites and is used as reference for the comparison of parameters.

In each of the study sites, leaves of five (5) tree species were also collected three times within the same period. For the leaf samples, determination of leaf extract pH, ascorbic acid, chlorophyll, and relative water content were carried out. Correlation analysis between air pollutants variables and plant pollution indicators showed that increased levels of pollution resulted in elevated leaf extract pH, depression of chlorophyll and relative water content. The amount of ascorbic acid was not uniformly affected by the relative dose of air pollutants.

The measured leaf parameters indicated that the responses of the 5 tree (mango, starapple, jackfruit, guava and mahogany) species to air pollution are varried. Among them, mango and jackfruit showed the highest sensitivity towards pollution loading. The least sensitive is mahogany, which suggests that the latter is a tolerant species and is suitable for the belt zone around pollution sites.

Objectives

General Objective:To conduct air quality measurement in selected industrial sites in Iligan City using standard and phytomonitoring methods; To establish phytomonitoring as an alternative and less expensive method for measurement of air pollution. Specific Objectives: 1. To conduct analysis of air samples for the following parameters: SO2,NOx, particulate matter, lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) using standard methods in selected sites. 2. To conduct analysis of plant leaf samples using the air pollution tolerance index (APTI).3. To identify the most sensitive plant species in sampling sites for use in the APTI method.4. To conduct correlation analysis to determine relationship between air pollution variables and plant pollution indicators.
