Safety and efficacy of rofecoxib, a specific COX-2 inhibitor in older Filipino patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety profiles well as effect on functional status of rofecoxib 25 mg among older Filipino outpatients with osteoarthritis
DESIGN: Prospective open-labeled, end outcome clinical trial
SETTING: Geriatric Center OPD, St. Lukes Medical Center
POPULATION: 60 yrs old and above with self-reported symptoms of osteoarthritis who completed the 2 weeks follow-up
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Analgesia was evaluated using Knee Osteoarthritis Severity Index and 100mm Visual Analog Scale on days 0, 7 and 14 days. Patients global assessment and functional mobility after 2 weeks of treatment with rofecoxib 25 mg and side-effects
RESULTS: Of the 208 older patients enrolled in the study, 175 patients were able to complete the study. Improvement of symptoms was noted in 143/175 (81.5 percent), ten patients reported treatment-related adverse events. Highly significant, positive correlation was observed between functional mobility and intake of rofecoxib 25mg after 2 weeks treatment
CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that rofecoxib 25 mg once daily is an effective and well-tolerated analgesic agent when given to older Filipino patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) to achieve pain relief and improved mobility. (Author)
