Abstract
Objective: To determine the association between electrocardiographic findings and echocardiographic evidence of diastolic dysfunction
Study Design: Retrospective study
Methods: Subjects included all hypertensive patients seen at the Santo Tomas University Hospital from July 1999 to July 2000 who were diagnosed to have diastolic dysfunction by 2-D Doppler echocardiography. Their 12-lead electrocardiograms were then retrieved and the findings were compared to the echocardiographic evidence of diastolic dysfunction, using the chi-square test
Results and Conclusion: The seven most common electrocardiographic findings in patients with diastolic dysfunction were: (1) non-specific ST-T wave changes, (2) poor R wave progression, (3) left ventricular hypertrophy, (4) persistent posterobasal forces, (5) inferior wall infarction, (6) left atrial enlargement, and (7) sinus bradycardia. There was no association between the echocardiographic and the electrocardiographic findings. The 12-lead electrocardiogram cannot be used as a screening tool for the diagnosis of diastolic dysfunction.
