McKenzie exercise reduced low back pain among and disability among tricycle drivers.

Low back pain (LBP) is an important health problem associated with high cost of medication, work absenteeism and disability if not treated. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of McKenzie Method on LBP and disability.

The study used a quantitative true experimental multiple timed series research design. The 10 subjects were chosen through non-probability purposive sampling. A demographic sheet was used to gather person, task and environment related factors and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was used in measuring LBP and disability. The experimental group (EG) performed 6 weeks McKenzie Exercises while the control group (CG) performed UE stretching exercises. Multiple linear regression was used to identify the strongest predictor of ODI and t-test in comparing the effects of exercises.

The subjects mean age was 45.90±11.55 years; height and weight were 167.86±5.14 cm and 64.90±12.71 kg respectively, works 9.20±2.49 hours/day and 6.50±0.53 days/week. The mean distance of travel was 14.90±6.94 km. The strongest predictor of ODI was distance of travel (r = 0.570; p = 0.038). A four week McKenzie exercise program reduce ODI scores but not statistically significant (p=0.192).

McKenzie exercise reduces chronic-non-specific low back pain and disability however, it is not statistically significant on a 4 week intervention.
