Effect of endurance exercise among Filipino body builders.

Neck pain is a musculoskeletal condition that can arise from repetitive movement with heavy load. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of endurance exercises on the chronic nonspecific neck pain and disability of bodybuilders.

The study used a quantitative multiple time series experimental research design. The subjects were chosen with nonprobability purposive sampling. A demographic questionnaire was used in collecting the person and task variables, then visual analogue scale was used for the environmental factors, while the Neck Disability Index (NDI) was used in evaluating neck pain and disability. Neck endurance exercises were given to the experimental group while a placebo treatment was given to the control group. MLR was used in identifying the strongest predictor of NDI, while t- test was used to test the hypothesis.

The participants had a mean age, height, weight, load, bodybuilding hours and years of 28.5±9.81 years, 171.91±6.50 cm, 66.80±7.80 kg, 42.50±16.47 kg, 102±40.50 min and 6.50±4.25 months, respectively. Nine participants are male, 8 are married, while 9 are College graduates, and 8 are non-smokers. The environment was rated as 7.50±1.78 cm, 6.10±0.99 cm, 6.50±1.43 cm, 7.70±0.95 cm and 7.10±1.66 cm in terms of lighting, temperature, air quality, room size and acoustics, respectively. Age was the strongest predictor of NDI (r=-0.571, p=0.342). Endurance exercises significantly reduced the neck pain and disability of the experimental group (p=0.000) after 4 weeks.

The modification of their general workout in relation to the age of the respondents can potentially decrease the risk of neck pain. The inclusion of endurance exercises on their regular workouts will promote less pain acquisition.
