The antihelminthic effect of 50% zingiber officinale (Ginger) rhizome decoction on ascaris suum.

Objective: To determine the antihelminthic effect of 50% Zingiber officinale (ginger) rizhome decoction on Ascaris suum.


Design: Experimental research design.


Setting: The study was conducted at the residence of one of the researchers located in Maria Cristina St. Capitol site, Cebu City.


Subjects: Forthy-eight (48) adult Ascaris suum were chosen throug purposive sampling based on the set criteria. The worms were then randomly allocated into three groups.


Procedure: Forty-eight (48) Ascaris suum from freshly slaughtered hogs in carbon market slaughterhouse were collected and subsequently measured as to its length and were equally distributed by simple random allocation into three (3) test groups (16 Ascaris suum for each group): #1 ginger decoction, #2 positive control (Mebendazole), #3 negative control (NSS). the test substance, 50% ginger rhizome decoction, was prepared by slicing 500 grams of ginger rhizome and mixed with 1000 ml of boiling distilled water. mebendazole suspension (Antiox) was used as positive control. One bottle (10ml of 50mg/ml solution) was diluted with 1000 ml of distilled water so that it would have a dilution of 50% which is similar to the test substance. Normal Saline Solution (NSS) served as the negative control. Thirty (30) ml of each of the 3 substances were then poured to their respective containers. Eight containers were allocated to each group with 2 worms soaked in each container. The onset of paralysis and the number of worms paralyzed after 7 hours were observed and recorded.


Research Instrument: Stopwatch was used to determine the mean paralyzing exposure time in hour and an observation data sheet to document the mean paralyzing exposure time as well as the number of worms paralyzed in 7 hours.


Result: The antihelminthic effect was assessed by observing the time of onset of paralysis of the worms and the percentage of worms paralyzed within 7 hours. The antihelminthic efficacy in the three groups based on percent paralyzing time efficacy (PPTE) and the percent worms paralyzed (PWP) was computed then categorized as to very effective, moderately effective, fairly effective, slightly effective, and not effective. The results showed that the positive control and the test group with the computed antihelminthic efficacy of 100% and 87% respectively, were categorized to be very effective because its computed antihelminthic efficacy fall within the range of 81-100% while the negative control is categorized to be not effective because its computed antihelminthic efficacy is 6.51%.


Conclusion: The researchers conclude that 50% Zingiber officinale (ginger) rhizome decoction is an effective antihelminthic agent against Ascaris suum with an antihelminthic efficacy categorized as very effective.
