The hypoglycemic effect of Zea mays L. ("buhok ng mais") on the blood glucose level was studied on Alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Freeze dried extract of "buhok ng mais" was administered orally at two close levels namely 5.40g/kg and 2.14 g/kg, after the LD50 value of 20.01 +/-5.83 g/kg was determined. The results obtained were unexpected. The effects of the two different dose levels of the test drug were not the same, such that the higher dose (5.40 g/kg) showed a sharp rise in the blood glucose levels of the rats while the lower dose (2.14 g/kg) rats showed a decrease in the blood glucose levels of the rats. Furthermore, these results were found to be statistically insignificant.
