Comparison of Ipil-ipil (Leucena leucocephala) seed suspension, papaya (Carica papaya) seed suspension and pyrantel pamoate suspension as anti-helminthics among children ages 5-9 years old.

A formulated Ipil-ipil seed suspension and Papaya seed suspension with proven anti-helminthic properties against Ascariasis were given to 150 pediatric patients ages 5 to 9 years old. These were compared to Pyrantel pamoate (control group) as to cure rates. Patients were grouped separately as to light and moderate infection to determine what level are these 2 drugs effective. Papaya seed suspension has a high cure rate of 88 percent and 78 percent in the mild and moderate infection respectively and with the least side effects while Ipil-ipil seed suspension has the least cure rate of 78 percent in the mild infection and 66 percent in the moderate infection. Both seed preparations were acceptable to the patients as to smell, taste, and color. (Author)
