FNRI's clinical nutrition researches for nutrition intervention: Retrospect and prospect.

This paper presents a perspective of clinical nutrition researches at the Food and Nutrition Research Institute. A conceptual framework is given upon which the identification for research gaps were drawn. A review is presented of all clinical nutrition researches covering the disease entities such as beri-beri, toxemia, diabetes, obesity, hyperlipoproteinemia, hyperuricemia and tuberculosis as well as tools such as the Food Exchange List and other therapeutic handouts. Among the recent accomplishments is the renal handbook for physicians and dietitians which includes an exchange list of food containing similar levels of sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and fluid with their corresponding protein content. The special interest in enteral nutrition led to the study on the evaluation of blenderized diet formulations. Findings revealed that the tube feeding formulas in hospitals in Metro Manila are generally inadequate when compared with dietary presriptions. Bacteriological examinations of the samples showed that out of the 109 specimen taken, 75% were positive for coliform, four were positive for E Coli and eight for S. aureus. The thrust for future clinical nutrition researches will be towards evaluation using more sensitive and specific parameters for clinical assessement; more intensive studies on the relationship between food and diseases and assessment of cost effectiveness of different therapeutic modalities.
