Antigenotoxic effects of coconut oil on somatic and germ cells.

Fresh coconut oil made from fresh coconut milk was incorporated in experimental diets for mice. Eighteen percent coconut oil diets were fed ad libitum. Effects on genotoxicity of tetracycline, methylmethanesulfonate, dimethylnitrosamine and benzo(a)pyrene were studied on bone marrow cells. The effects of coconut oil diets were compared with those given soybean oil diets and fat-free diets. Coconut oil showed a greater inhibitory effect on the genotoxicity of the 4 mutagens than soybean oil. A greater inhibitory effect of coconut oil was observed when restricted feeding of the diet was used. Coconut oil reduced the formation of micronucleated erythrocytes.

Genotoxicity of the 4 mutagens of germ cells was also inhibited by coconut oil. This was shown by increased fertility index, increased gestation index and reduced dead implants. The inhibitory effect of coconut oil was greater than that of soybean oil for tetracycline. Soybean oil enhanced the germ cell genotoxicity of methyl-methanesulfonate, dimethylnitrosamine and benzo(a)pyrene. In the soybean oil group these mutagens induced zero fertility, even after ten weeks of mating.
