Makati Medical Center suicide profile: A five-year study.

113 suicide patients admitted at Makati Medical Center from September 1982 to October 1987 were studied. This was done through a retrospective review of these patients charts. The following demographic variables and trends were looked into: sex, age, nationality , marital status, educational attainment, occupational status, religion, stress, number of previous attempts, method of suicide, associated psychiatric illness, whether or not the patient was seeing a psychiatrist prior to suicide and the month of occurrence The suicidal patient was typically a female, in the range of 20-29 years of age. Filipino, single, had a college level education, was a housewife or a student, Catholic, and beset with family problems. Most were first attempters, used an overdose of drugs or toxic substances and were given a psychiatric diagnosis of adjustment disorder. Majority were not seeing a psychiatrist before the attempt.
