673 isolates of S. aureus from the Central Laboratory of the Philippine General Hospital and from daily ward surveillance were tested. 289 of the 673 isolates (42.9%) were isolated from skin and mucus membrane lesions. 88 (13%) from blood cultures, 68 (10.10%) from localized collection of , 46 (6.8%) from respiratory secretion, while 60 (8%) were from nasal and perianaal carriers. 161 of 652 were negative for beta lactamase while 491 (74%) were beta lactamase producers. 129 of the non-beta lactamase producers were resistant to Penicillin based on the disk diffucion method. Using the 1 mg Oxacillin dise, the overall resistance to Oxacillin was 32% (213/664). Only 9 of 213 resistant isolates grew a subcolony; 4 appeared as descrete colones while 5 appeared as a thin film within the zone of inhilition. Using a 5 mg methicillin disc, 248/652 (38%) were considered resistant.
