 Gavino RR

A common-source epidemic due to Vibrio cholerae, biotype El Tor, serotype Ogawa, occurred in Barangay Bato, Lamitan, Basilan (population, 2218). Over-all attack rate was 6%. A case-control study showed the common source to be an open dug well. Persons with cholera were 13 times more likely to get their water from the open dug well than the neighborhood controls. The source of contamination, however was not identified. This outbreak raises the concern of other outbreaks of cholera occuring in remote and poor barangays where the environmental circumstances are conducive to cholera spread
