Objectives

The study was done to determine the effects of  frequent and prolonged computer mouse use on the muscle performance of the hand and shoulder girdle areas of the dominant upper extremity, particularly the handgrip and scapular stabilizer strength. The relationship between the strengths of the handgrip and scapular stabilizers was also established. Grip strength of the dominant hand and the muscle strength of scapular stabilizers of 18-25 year old Physical Therapy students were measured using a Lafayette Hand dynamometer and following the standard manual muscle testing procedures respectively. Results show that handgrip and scapular stabilizer strengths of the respondents were below the normal value. No significant correlation exists between handgrip strength and lower trapezius strength of the respondents based on age and gender. However, a significant ion was found between handgrip strength and serratus anterior strength for both genders particularly among the 20-24 old age group.
