Hypoglycemic effect of togue (Phaseolus radiatus, Linn) on alloxan-induced hyperglycemic rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Togue (Phaseolus radiatus, Linn), or mung bean sprout may contain nutrients more than the parent seed such as Vitamin C, riboflavin, niacin, choline, and biotin. In a study by Panlasigui et al, five different legumes used in the Philippines including mung bean, have a significant glycemic effect on human subjects.


DESIGN AND SETTING: This experimental study will be performed at the animal room of the Cebu Institute of Medicine. To induced hyperglycemia. Alloxan will be injected intraperitoneally twice with a 24 hour interval at a dosage of 4.29 ml of 1 4% solution /kg body weight. Three days after the second injection of alloxan, blood glucose levels will be checked to confirm the presence of hyperglycemia. Administration of treatment will also start, given twice a day for three days.


SUBJECT: Sixty 12-18 month old male rabbits of approximately the same weight with baseline blood glucose within +- standard deviation.


INTERVENTION: Distilled water, 0/4 IU insulin/kg body weight, and 30 ml togue extract (1:1 dilution).


MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Blood glucose level, determine using a standard glucometer.
