Refractory ascites of cirrhosis: Newer therapeutic procedures.

In a group of 25 patients of cirrhosis of the liver with so called "intractable" ascites, a regimen of large doses of a thiazide compound, plus spironolactone, proved effective in decreasing or eliminating the ascites and edema. In a small number of cases, the addition of prednisone to the above regimen was necessary for obtaining clearance of the ascites. The patients tolerated this regimen well and showed no significant side effects. Most of the patients could be followed on an outpatient basis after they were discharged from the hospital. (Summary)
