Studies on dengue haemorrhagic fever in the Philippines: entomological aspects.

Information on the distribution and density of Aedes aegypti in the City of Manila was obtained during a 12-month survey in 1978 to 1979 using standard entomological procedures and calculations for adult and larval mosquito indices. This entailed weekly observations in eight permanent stations selected after a pilot study in representative districts of the City
The over-all indices were: indoor resting density, 4.17 (females) and 2.65 (males); biting/landing rate, 2.30 (females and 1.89 (males); infestation rate, 36%; nulliparity rate, 0.71; parous rate, 0.29; Breteau index, 41.53; premise index or house index, 26.63%; container index, 21.13%; larval breeding preference, by category of container, represented by drums, 41.94% (outdoor), 40.22% (indoor), jars, 29.87% (outdoor), 22.58 (indoor); miscellaneous (e.g. tires, tin cans, flower pots, etc.) 20.37% (outdoor), 15.04% (indoor), 99.5% of the larvae recovered from these containers were those of Aedes aegypti. The indices varied significantly among stations and/or districts; and by month and/or season. Threshold density levels relative to biological transmission and/or disease transmission are being proposed. Efforts on dengue virus isolation from mosquitoes were not as fruitful.(Auth. Abs.)
