Background: With the increasing prevalence of cancer, the 3rd leading cause of mortality in the Philippines as of 2009, there is a necessity for therapeutic interventions such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Chemotherapy, the mainstay of cancer treatment, has a significant adverse effect of myelosuppression where bone marrow activity is depressed resulting in pancytopenia (anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia). Hematopoietic growth factors offer a solution to anemia and leukopenia. Only recombinant interleukin 11 has been found to remedy thrombocytopenia however it is used with caution because of its limited therapeutic index. Thus, chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia remains a concern. Several studies have shown that Ipomoea batatas  (Sweet potato) leaf extracts induce significant hematopoietic activity. Objective: The study aims to determine platelet augmentation effects of Sweet potato leaf extracts cyclophosphamide-induced thrombocytopenic rats. Design: True experimental design: Randomized control trial.Setting: Yandug's veterinary clinic. Population: Simple random sampling with healthy, juvenile (3 mos. - 1 year) Sprague-dawley rats (Rattus norvegicus), gender equally distributed amongst males and females. Maneuver: Based on a study by Nie et al (2009), thrombocytopenia is induced through multiple intraperitoneal injections at regular intervals of cyclophosphamide (70 mg/kg) with a subsequent significant decrease in the platelet estimates before administration of Sweet potato leaf extracts. The leaf extracts are administered via oral gavage based on dosage and schedules. Platelet estimates are measured with blood samples collected through the tail snip method directly smeared onto glass slides by Wedge method. Platelet estimates: Baseline, post-cyclophosphamide, and post-extract estimates. Result and Conclusion: The findings showed that after a significant drop in platelets after cyclophosphamide injections, a rise by 80.07 was noted for the experimental group. But this was paired with a concomitant increase in platelet counts for the control group around 68.21%. Both changes in platelet counts were statistically insignificant due to considerable variation in the responses for each case under the groups. With regards to related literature, the extracts may augment platelet production in a healthy bone marrow, but not in a suppressed one. Such increases are deemed bone marrow dependent.
