ABSTRACT

Background.    Phototherapy  is  a treatment modality   utilizing non-ionizing   radiation   which  may be used  for psoriasis,   atopic dermatitis,   other forms  of chronic  eczema,   vitiligo,   and other inflammatory  dermatologic  conditions.

Objectives.   This  study  aimed  to describe the clinical   profile

of phototherapy patients at the Dermatology  Center of the St. Luke's Medical  Center,  Quezon City. Philippines (SLMC-QC) from December 2002 to October 2013.

Me/hods This  was  a  retrospectivcross-sectional study involving   chart   review.   Participants   were   all   patients  who underwent phototherapy at the said unit during the specified time period. The  following were described: totanumber of patients, demographics, frequency of use of each mode of phototherapy, dermatologic indications, average number of patient visits, average number of repeat courses, average number of sessions per  course for  patients  with  more  than  one  course,  rate  of treatment success, reasons for discontinuation of treatment, and presence or absence of adverse reactions.

Results.   There  was  a total  of 493  phototherapy  patients

from 2002 to October 2013.  Narrowband UVB was the common modality used.  More than half of these patients were in early to middle adulthood. Sex distribution was more or less equal. Majority were of skin phototype IV.

Conclusion.  The results of this study are generally consistent with the llteraturePsoriasis, eczemas, vitiligo, and cutaneous lymphoma were the top dermatologic indications for phototherapy in this institution during the said period. Rate of treatment success was generally high for all dermatologic indications. Adverse effects were  minimal, mostly  being erythema  post-procedure, without being severe enough as to lead to discontinuation of therapy.
