The study aimed to determine the awareness of the elderly to the public ordinances and laws towards air pollution in the selected barangays of La Trinidad, Benguet. Furthermore, it also aimed to determine the preventive practices and health problems as perceived by the elderly related to air pollution.
Data were gathered from the elderly residing in the selected barangays of La Trinidad, Benguet. The study was conducted from October to February of 2015.
The data collected were subjected to weighted mean and frequency count and percentage for statistical analysis.
The findings of the study revealed that the elderly are aware on the ordinances and regulations towards air pollution. The results also showed that the effective preventive practices initiated by the elderly emphasize on waste segregation, cooking methods, and avoidance of the use of aerosol sprays and repellants.
Findings also shows that elderly perceived problems in the heart and respiratory in relation to air pollution.
The conclusions from the result were made, elderly generally aware on the ordinances and regulations towards air pollution prevention. Preventive practices initiated by the elderly towards air pollution entails on waste segregation, cooking methods, avoidance of the use of aerosol sprays and repellants, and promotion of organic farming. Elderly perceived health problems are common to cardiovascular and respiratory system which contributory factors from air pollution, and reasons indicated are job- related, long exposure and pesticide abuse, residential area, geographical location by altitude, and agricultural industry.
As to recommendations, massive information campaign by the concern agencies regarding the public ordinances for the elderly to be more aware of the content of the Standards, Policies and Guidelines by conducting seminars, distributing booklets and flyers regarding prevention of air pollution at the municipal level. Local government units shall conduct seminars and workshops on the ways on how to control air pollution and its effect to human health, to include elderly on the activities being implemented to control air pollution. In the barangay level, elderly should be encouraged to participate on the activities such as tree planting, clean up drive, and massive information campaign towards prevention of air pollution. Local Government Units should allocate budget, monitoring and documentation system of possible health effects of air pollution. Department of Health focus more on information campaign regarding the effects of air pollution to human health and aid in giving health educations through seminars, sessions and workshop about air pollution preventive practices and management of the effects of it. A similar study should be conducted with the adult and children respondents on different areas on of La Trinidad, including BLISST areas to determine if they have the same level of extent of awareness, preventive practices towards air pollution, and health problems experienced related to air pollution. A cohort experimental study is highly recommended to associate health problems as effects of air pollution.
