ASSOCIATION OF SOCIO-CLINICAL PROFILE AND REPETITIVE WORK MOVEMENTS TO CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME.

Abstract

   The study was done to determine the relationship between socio-economic profile and repetitive work movements to carpal tunnel syndrome. A self-made questionnaire, standardized tool and physical examination were utilized to establish socio-clinical profile of the respondents, assess presence of repetitive work movements and determine the presence of carpal tunnel syndrome among the subjects. The assessment of repetitive tasks (ART) tool was used to assess the tasks that require movements of the upper limbs. Fifty two percent of the respondents are females 89% are 20-34 years old, 59% are employed as cooks and 71% have a normal BMI. Eighty two percent of the respondents are exposed to repetitive movements. There was higher prevalence of CTS among female workers and in the young adult age group. Those who are working as counter girl, cashier and washer showed greater CTS risk compared to other employees exposed to repetitive work. Statistically significant association was established for age and hand posture and occurrence of CTS risk. This shows that age and posture of the hands and wrist are related to CTS risk. An appropriate intervention in the workplace to improve the health status of the workers especially those exposed to repetitive movements which may in turn lead to greater productivity is warranted
