Ethical comportment of healthcare professionals in social media: A cross-sectional survey of attitudes, behavior, and awareness of physicians practicing in Metro Manila.

BACKGROUND: Social media networks are interactive web-based platforms that allow a user to create a profile and make social connections or relations among people sharing the same interests and/or background. It provides rapid dissemination of information among users across the platform. In the health care system, patients and doctors use these platforms to facilitate communication between patients and among themselves and to help build better relationships. Furthermore, due to its worldwide scope, it also helps the health care sector in promoting health and wellness among members of the community. However, this same characteristic of social media network could also impede upon social boundaries and patient privacy.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the level of awareness, attitude and behavior of medical clerks in Metro Manila on the subject of ethical comportment on social media with regards to medical issues along with the relationship different factors to attitude and behavior.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study was done on 372 medical clerks from medical schools in Metro Manila. The number of respondents was determined using the formula for sample size determination for simple random sampling. Cronbach Coefficient Alpha was used to determine the validity of the questionnaires which was disseminated through a structured self-administered online questionnaire, Google form, via Facebook-Messenger. The study was conducted over a course of 6 weeks from January to February of this year, 2018. Independent statisticians were employed for analysis and interpretation of results using Statistica software.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:  In this study, majority of the surveyed medical clerks are aware of the ethical practices of medicine in social media (mean: 71.16%, 71.24%) and have displayed ethical attitude (mean: 26.57%, 29.37%) and behavior (mean: 69.57%, 69.35%) as evidenced by their responses to the aforementioned questions. Correlating attitude to other factors, there are a few, specifically knowledge, posting for advocacy (p value= 0.001447) and utilizing of tablets (p-value= 0.001447), that were noted to have an inverse effect with the attitude of medical clerks. Conversely, factors such as posting for purpose of education (p-values= 0.015142) and socialization (p-values= 0.001973) were noted to have direct effect with the attitude of medical clerks. Factors affecting behavior, such as knowledge (p-value= 0.000005), posting for purpose of blogging (p-value: 0.006596) and storage (p value = 0.000049) were noted to have inverse effect with the behavior of medical clerks.
