Stressors, personality types and levels of depression among selected first year college students.

This study was conducted to explore the role of personality on the levels of depression among first year college students of Cebu Institute of Technology-University which sought answers to the following: (1) the profile of the respondents in terms of age and place of origin, (2) the individual's prevailing personality: Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism (3) level of depression of the individual, (4) the contributing factors of depression and (5) what intervention program could be proposed.


            The data were gathered through the use of Qualitative Research Method. It made use of interviews of which questionnaire was constructed by the researchers themselves. The gathered data were transcribed and the information provided by the research participants was kept confidential. Standardized expert tools were used to gather more information about the research participants.


Findings of the study showed that personality had a link to levels of depression, but it depends on how certain trait was extremely manifested in an individual and its interaction with the presenting stressor. In-depth interviews conducted to the research participants and with the use of thematic analysis, themes emerged during the coding process and these were homesickness, academic struggle, parental concerns, peer relations and feeling of inadequacy.


This study illustrates the role of personality and other factors of depression manifested among first year college students. The results of the study were unique to the research participants that is why it is then recommended that the study be replicated so that the results of the study will be verified as to its validity and reliability.
