Comparison of spinal block with isobaric bupivacaine versus hyperbaric bupivacaine in caesarian section

Abstract

 


SETTING: Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, an urban, tertiary, government owned hospital in Cebu City, Philippines.


DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive


STUDY POPULATION:


One hundred and five patients from Obstetric Department who underwent Caesarian section from May 2004 - December 2004.


RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:


Isobaric bupivacaine produced adequate level of anesthesia for surgery in 75% of the patients and produced a rapid onset of spinal block in 67% of the patients  in a dosage compatible with Cesarean section. Complete recovery of motor block occurred in 2 hours with either form of bupivacaine.

General: To compare isobaric bupivacaine 0.5% 12 mg injected intrathecally in patient who underwent caesarian setion.


Specific:


(1) To compare isobaric bupivacaine 0.5% 12 mg versus hyperbaric bupivacaine 0.5% 12 mg as to:


      1.1 adequate level of anesthesia


      1.2 rapid onset of spinal block


      1.3 complete recovery of motor block
