GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

The study aims to determine the relationship between level of anxiety and level of achievement in Mathematics of Freshmen Education Students for the first semester of school year 1998-1999.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the followwing questions:
a. What is the level of anxiety of education students in mathematics according to gender, type of school he graduated from, and Deviation Intelligence Quotient (DQI)?

b.Is there a significant difference in the level of anxiety of education students in mathematics according to gender, type of school he graduated from, and Deviation Intelligence Quotient (DQI)?

c.What is the level of achievement of education students in basic mathematics according to gender, type of school he graduated from, and Deviation Intelligence Quotient (DQI)?

d.Is there a significant difference in the level of achievement of education students in basic mathematics according to gender, type of school he graduated from, and Deviation Intelligence Quotient (DQI)?

e.What are the factors that cause level of anxiety?

f.Is there any relationship between the level of anxiety and the level of achievement of education students in mathematics according to gender, type of school he graduated from, and Deviation Intelligence Quotient (DQI)?

Abstract

CONTEXT: With the prevailing Mathematics education scenario, this study is conceived with the aim of determining the relationship of level of mathematics anxiety and the achievement in mathematics of college students.

OBJECTIVES: The study aims to determine the relationship between level of anxiety and level of achievement in Mathematics of Freshmen Education Students for the first semester of school year 1998-1999.

STUDY DESIGN: The descriptive analysis was used to determine the level of anxiety and level of academic achievement of students in mathematics and the significant differences between the level of anxiety and level of academic achievement of students in basic mathematics according to gender, type of school he graduated from, and Deviation Intelligence Quotient (DQI). Correlational analysis was used to determine the relationship of the level of anxiety and level of academic achievement of students in mathematics. The documentary analysis was used top gather the level of mathematics anxiety and basic mathematics grades of education students.

STUDY SETTING: College of Education, Ateneo de Naga University, Naga City, Philippines, 4400.

STUDY POPULATION: This study involved 83 freshmen education students enrolled in Basic Mathematics for the first semester of academic year 1998-1999. Excluded as respondents were transferees, shiftees from other courses who obtained a final grade of Failed (F) and those who failed due to excessive absence (AF).

RESULTS: Levels of mathematics anxiety was significantly related o academic achievement in mathematics of education students.
