Some environmental factors affecting growth of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms.

Abstract

The growth pattern of Eichhornia crassipes as affected by some environmental factors which was studied. There is very slow sprouting capacity of the rhizomes subjected to long drying periods. Its growth rate was increased when it was exposed to full sunlight condition. Superior growth was attained when water hyacinth was planted in shallow water where its roots were able to penetrate the mud. Normal development of the plant occurred between pH6.5 and 8.5. No growth at pH 4.5 and there was a decline at pH 10.5
