Objectives: To determine the visual acuity of 3-5 year olds in Sitio Bisaya, Dasmarinas, Cavite and To determine possible factors of visual impairment among 3 to 5 year olds in Sitio Bisaya Dasmarinas, Cavite.
Study Design: Cross- sectional study
Setting: The study was conducted at the community's day care center situated at the center of the barangay and was accessible to subjects of the study.
Patient or subject selection: All children aged 3-5 years living in Sitio Bisaya, Dasmarinas, Cavite in 2012 without a previous diagnosis of any ocular disorder or vision impairment and whose parents consented for the inclusion of their child in the sudy.
Outcome Measures: A visual acuity score of less than 20/40 or a two line difference between the eyes even if the visual acuity is within passing range, any ocular misalignment and the presence of any lesion or opacity in the ocular media that may indicate the presence of a cataract or tumor, etc.
Results: The prevalence of visual impairment in this study is 8.9% with majority belonging to the 3 year old group. Three out 4 patients with visual impairment were malnourished with one overweight, another stunted and the other severely stunted. The prevalence rate was higher than the national prevalence rate for visual impairment of 0.43%. These children with visual impairment were all asymptomatic and were referred to the Department of Ophthalmology for further evaluation.
Conclusions: This study emphasizes the need for early vision screening for this age group since most of the children found to have possible visual impairment belong to the youngest age group and none of them complained of any symptom. Although 75% of the patients with vision impairment were malnourished, no direct relationship between the state of nutrition and visual acuity can be drawn from from this study. Children of this age group are best assessed using the LEA (Picture) Charts.
