Abstract The Glidescope Ranger (GR) is a new video laryngoscope that claims to provide excellent laryngeal or Cormack-Lehane (CL) views 99% of the time. In this study, we evaluated the GR and its capability when used on Filipino patients with a Mallampati 2 score or greater, and those with predicted difficult airways.
Seventy-five patients for a procedure requiring general anesthesia and intubation were included in this study. We had 65 Mallampati 2 and 10 Mallampati 3 patients. All our attempts were recorded via an attachment on the GR called the Glidescope Digital Video Recorder (DVR), and were later reviewed.
Our success rate in intubation using the GR was 100%, and all were intubated on the first attempt. Seventy-one or 94.66% had a CL score of 1; the rest had a score of 2. There is some skill required to intubate while looking at a video monitor, but the learning curve is not high. We conclude that the GR is an effective device especially in those patients with difficult airways.
