This study was done to ascertain whether the pharmacologic effects of Arcangelisia flava extracts are attributable to its berberine content which is claimed to be the principal alkaloid contained in the plant. Our findings can not settle the issue, but the following conclusions about Arcangelisia flava extract are made. 1. Intravenous doses of Arcangelisia flava extract in the dog were found to cause hypotension, bradycardia and increased myocardial contractions. 2. In an isolated turtle heart, the rate of which is not significantly below the rate when the preparation was just began, Arcangelisia causes a decrease in heart rate. 3. When the isolated turtle heart however has suffered a marked decrease in heart rate as compared to the heart rate at the start of the experiment, the drug caused a remarkable stimulation of rate and increase of amplitude. 4. Arcangelisia flava extracts administered intravenously to dogs, caused stimulation of respiratory rate an initial increase in amplitude of respiration followed by a longer depression but no significant changes in tidal air. 5. There was also an increase in ileal amplitude and tone. 6. Intraarterially, Arcangelisia flava extract produced paralysis of gastrocnemiuc-soleus contractions of the dog. No effects were seen on guinea pig non-pregnant isolated uterine strips and pregnant and non-pregnant dog uteri in situ.
Some of our findings were compared with the studies of other authors.
