Thyroid extract in the management of hypercholesterolemia.

Fourteen cases with hypercholesterolemia of various etiologies were treated with thyroid extract at the dosage of 2-6 grains daily for periods varying from 4 weeks to 16 months. Lowering of the serum cholesterol was noted in all cases. Elevation of the same was noted after the suspension of the therapy. There were no side effects noted. These observations are in consonance with those of the foreign workers.
Four patients with arteriosclerotic heart disease improved clinically with the therapy. It is the opinion of the author that it throughout the therapy. It is the opinion of the author that it is safe to use thyroid extract to reduce serum cholesterol in patients with coronary heart disease.
