Five soft coral genera namely Sinularia, Lobophyton, Xenia, Nephthea and Pachyclavularia found in shallow waters of Taklong Island, Guimaras were screened for antimicrobial and ichthyotoxic properties.
Of the five soft coral species screened, three showed potential pharmacologic potential. These were: (1) Lobophyton sp. which had weak and moderate inhibitory action on the growth of gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, respectively. It was also found to be the most ichthyotoxic on tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) fry among the soft coral species screened; (2) Sinularia sp. which showed weak antimicrobial effects against S. aureus but was not ichthyotoxic; and, (3) Pachyclavularia was ichthyotoxic but did not show antimicrobial properties. The study aims to determine the bioactivity of aqueous extracts of selected Philippine soft coral species. The specific objectives are 1) to determine the toxicity of aqueous extracts selected soft coral species on Oreochromis sp. (tilapia) fry using mortality as an index of toxicity; and 2) to determine the presence of antifungal and antibacterial properties of the aqueous extracts through sensitivity tests for selected microorganisms.
