Comparison of the efficacy of Ogawa culture medium and Lowenstein-Jensen medium for culture isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Six percent (6%) of the 325 specimens in both LJ and Ogawa tubes were contaminated. Four percent (4%) more of the LJ tubes got contaminated during incubation (8 weeks). Only one Ogawa tube got contaminated during incubation.

On culture tubes that completed 8 weeks of incubation without contamination, mycobacterial growth has noted in 96.9% of 123 Ogawa tubes and 93.6% of 121 LJ tubes. The avergae incubation time was 3.4 weeks for Ogawa and 3.5 weeks for LJ. For both culture media, the colonies of M. TB were rough, dry and buffy. However, early and young colonies in Ogawa medium were noted to be smaller than those in the LJ medium. Luxuriant growth was however observed in both culture media with longer incubation.
