Epidemiological study of goiter and iodine deficiency disorders(IDD) in a goiter endemic area for an IDD control program (Phases II and III).

The study examined the extent of goiter and the etiologic (environmental, biological and socio-cultural) factors contributing to the goiter and iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) problems in a known endemic community, with the end in view of modelling a control program of water iodination. Iodine content of diet, water, soil and urine was analyzed using the Technicon Industrial Method or ceric sulfate reduction on the autoanalyzer. Radio-immunoassay technique was used for T4 and TSH determinations. Clinical examination revealed goiter prevalence rate of 32% in the population. Results of case-control observations showed the significant role of nutritional status, dietary iodine deficiency and socio-cultural factors in its etiology. Bacterial contamination of the community's water supply with E. coli was also implicated. Mental ability and goiter were correlated. Results of the feasibility study on water iodination is described.
