Comparative in vitro and in vivo study of the efficacy of topical aromatic oils versus lindane shampoo in the treatment of Pediculosis capitis.

1Daisy K. Ismael

Abstract

The poor outcome of our results regarding the effectivity of aromatic oils could probably be atributed to the inadequate exposure time of the head lice to the solution tested. Likewise, the concentration of aromatic oils may not be sufficient enough to eradicate the head lice quickly. It is therefore recommended that future studies be done using higher concentrations and longer application time if better affectivity is to be achieved.

Aromatic oils is an effective and safe treatment for Pediculosis capitis especially in children. So that even if its pediculicidal properties are not as good as 1% lindane shampoo, it can still be used as an alternative treatment for head lice if lindane is contraindicated, unavailable or unaffordable.
